Going to start off the review by saying it’s really not that good. In a nutshell, it’s a place to cook and sleep. Starting with the bathrooms, hot water was uncommon and the tap for hot water in the showers was quite literally a dribble which meant if you wanted a proper shower it was cold. The toilets were okay, albeit a little dirty and the sinks were fine. My girlfriend had the issue of no hairdryer, and when we asked for one we were told they don’t hand them out anymore due to people stealing them. She has also said that only two of the ten lights in the female bathroom work.
Onto the room. When we first arrived, only one bed was actually made, even though we checked in after the time suggested. We were in a 4 bed room which is good, but it was tiny. No space for 4 peoples luggage, however the lockers were suitable for two backpacks each, which is nice. There was no air-con, but it wasn’t too bad in the room as the evenings are fairly cool, and there was a fan on the wall which reached each bed when on the swing setting. The beds are uncomfortable as they are a thin foam mattress on a wire frame and they creek with every movement. There are also no curtains on the beds which is a nice touch in other hostels. You get woken up at 9:30 every morning as the announcement over the speakers reminds people to check out before 10am (which is early).
The kitchen wasn’t the best either, with it being dirty all of the time. Most nights we had to wait for knifes and forks to be used and washed as there weren’t enough provided, so keep this in mind when packing, and it is probably worth buying your own pan as they are scarce too. The fridges looked clean but had an off putting smell.
The common room was small, with most of it being dining tables and chairs, with two sofas and one pool table for the whole hostel which has about 60 rooms I’d say. Washing our clothes was also a nightmare as there are four washers and four dryers, and it costs four dollars for each. Bring your own washing powder/liquid too as the one you pay for is wash in the sink stuff.
The balcony/rooftop room is quiet and the pathetic excuse for a gym is set of weights and a yoga mat.
Overall, for the hostel commemorating 50 years of hostels in Australia, it’s disappointing. I won’t even mention the lift and how scary it is. There is no wonder it’s closing down, very unhappy with our stay.
Can’t recommend.
The Building is very old and dirty. There is no aircon in the rooms. There are no windows in the halls so it’s really smelly. The kitchen is small but not always that dirty. But to small for the amount of guests in the hostel. The bathrooms are really dirty and you don’t really want to shower there. The toilets are ok. The staff was really kind and friendly. Most of the washing machines are out of order. The car park is really good and locked. So no other people than the guests can enter the car park.
I have stayed there twice now in the last 6 months and I must admit it has gone scientifically down hill the first time I stayed one night and was extremely nice now that I have just left after staying four nights I can not say anything …
The room was bigger than expected, common areas were clean and we had hot water (good for an hostel 😂).
This hostel was pretty nice, with a good rooftop and good location.
Some things to improve :
- the check-out speaker waking you every morning + the vaccuum
-only 2 power points for 4 people and really far away from the bed : we couldn't charge our phone every night.. Big issue when you are out all day
-A little bit noisy
A dirty hostel and would not recommend. We chose YHA as it has a great name for itself but we were shocked and disappointed in our stay. The kitchen has disgusting, very dirty, loads of fruit flies around the fridge and shelf area. We also had to PAY for wooden cutlery at reception as there was so cutlery in the kitchen.
Our room was not clean, and there were dirty dishes left in the room for the week we stayed, although housekeeping would come in everyday to ‘clean’.
There was also an incident when we were there were a group of men had access to the women’s bathrooms and would bang on doors, and watch women as they left the bathroom which made guests very uncomfortable. We did say it to the staff and they were helpful to be fair and the issue was resolved.
The clothes washing facilities were bad. Only one washing machine worked out of 5.
The location was good and we liked the rooftop but that’s about it.
the worst hostel ive been at yet. the rooms are poorly ventilated and the windows barely open. the bathrooms reek and the shower walls are losing their wallpaper. the water your supposed to brush your teeth with has high levels of chlorine and is unpleasant to use/consume. the only good thing in this hostel is the janitor he’s a really nice guy.
First of all the staff are nice and friendly- however they weren’t always helpful. But the hostel is a mess. It’s run down and disgustingly dirty. I checked into an empty room- there was rubbish/trash everywhere as well as loads of hairs on …
good things : nice staff and large kitchen.
Walking to free Metro zone takes 5-10mins
Cheap price than other CBD. …
So first of all the rooms were pretty clean, except the floor. There was moulding food on the carpet floor and lots of dirt so that wasn’t too fun. Heads up about the beds though didn’t even had a stain on my sheets! Maybe you could replace …
I stayed at this hostel during a tour I was on, the hostel was freezing! Heating didn't work and in the end reception had to give us a portable heater. The kitchen fridge was disgusting with food that's been in there for too long and is …
